DOT Physicals Q & A
What is a DOT physical?
In order to protect public safety, all men and women who perform jobs that the Department of Transportation designates “safety-sensitive” must have regular physical exams to ensure they’re healthy enough to perform their job duties.
These physicals are similar to routine health exams offered by your chosen medical provider, but a DOT physical follows strict guidelines laid out by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Not all medical providers are authorized to complete these examinations. Evelyn Omoregbee at Healing Vessels Medical Associates LLC is on the DOT list of “approved examiners.”
What happens during a DOT physical exam?
When you come to your appointment, you bring a certification form with the upper portion already filled out. Your exam includes assessments of the following:
- Vision
- Hearing
- Heart function
- Breathing function
- External palpation of your abdomen to check for organ abnormalities
- Urinalysis
These are just some of the health categories covered during your physical examination. If your exam shows signs of any health issues, Ms. Omoregbee takes additional steps to gather more information.
Will I get my results the same day as my DOT exam?
Ms. Omoregbee can discuss any health concerns you have during your exam. If there are signs of medical issues, she asks follow-up questions to determine if you need more advanced screening or treatment.
You receive on-the-spot results for your blood pressure, vision assessment, and cholesterol screening. You may need to wait for the lab to complete your urinalysis. If your employer requests a drug screening, your urine sample can be used for that purpose.
You’ll know if you pass the DOT physical at the end of your visit. If so, you receive a copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate. An electronic report is sent directly to the Commercial Driver’s License Information System with your DOT paperwork.
Your medical certification is valid for 2 years unless your results indicated the need for an exemption. In that case, you may need to have a new DOT exam annually. Diabetes and certain vision issues are among the conditions that can trigger the need for an exemption.
